Junior Tennis

The following is an outline of all the organized coaching and playing options for Te Kura juniors.

TK Tennis Hot Shots Coaching.

THS is our programme for all young juniors (usually aged between 5 and 12 yrs) who are relatively new to the game and/or need to develop their skills further before they play competitive matches on a full-court. The THS coaching programme (complemented by matchplay and extra practice) will ultimately prepare juniors to play in an interclub team.

TK Tennis Hot Shots Match Play.

THS Match Play was launched at TK in 2014, and was a successful programme with those taking part making significant steps forward with their tennis.

This is a great opportunity for:

-players aged mainly 8 – 12.

-players who are in HS Orange or Green who want to accelerate their progression towards interclub.

Interclub Coaching and Matches

Interclub tennis is run by Tennis Canterbury. Interclub provides a competitive environment for Junior players between the ages of 9 and 18.
Teams are made up of five players who compete in both single and double matches. All parents of the team members are required to transport & supervise the team on a one in five roster basis. You must stay with the team for the duration of the matches.

Within each age group there are a number of divisions which helps us enter teams and players at an appropriate level.  We keep teams to a maximum of five players. Each team is allocated a one hour training session with their coach during the week.

Matches are played on Friday nights and Saturday mornings (you choose one day) across a wide range of clubs and locations throughout the city. Interclub tennis is not only a great environment to further develop our junior tennis talent, it also provides an interesting mix of individual and team achievements.

Before registering your child for Interclub you need to be familiar with the club's interclub guidelines and policies, found here:

Challenger grades.

For strong and competitive players, there are "Challenger" grades on Friday nights.  The formation of these teams is based on the coach's assessment of ability (which also takes into account configure ranking points) and the availability of spaces in a team at an appropriate level. Teams are allocated into Challenger grades by Canterbury Tennis based on the average Configure ranking points of the team members. You can find out more about configure rankings on the Tennis Canterbury Website.

Before registering your child for Challenger you need to be familiar with the club's Challenger guidelines and policies, found here:

Ladder Challenges

Juniors are able to challenge other junior players in the club. The aim is to work your way through the ladder with the aim of challenging yourself further, and this will also give you the opportunity to play more players of similar level.

All challenges must be played according to the most senior players interclub rules and using the balls the senior player uses for inter club.
Challenger players are best of three sets with a third set super tie breaker. All other interclub players are best of 17 games with a tie breaker at 8 all.
