THE STAGES.

BLUE - (ages 3-5)

Summer: 30 min,  Saturday morning (numbers permitting)

Winter: 30 min, 4 - 4:30pm, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur depending on player numbers.

The Blue stage introduces the game of tennis to young children, mainly through fun games and activities. Not only will the kids fall in love with the great game of tennis at a young age, but they'll also learn important fundamental motor skills and coordination that will set them up for a future in tennis. They will do many ball activities and build towards hitting real shots over the net and eventually rally.

RED - (ages 5-7).

Summer: 45 mins Fri from 3.30pm & Sat from 9.00am.

Winter: 45 min, 3:45 - 4:30pm, Mon, Tue, Wed or Thur. 3:45 - 4:30pm. Match-play Fri 3:45 - 4:30pm

The Red stage is the introductory stage for most players in this age bracket but it also provides plenty of scope to develop for players who already have experience but are not yet ready for the orange stage. The red ball is larger than a yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25% compression), making it easier for even the youngest players to hit and control. The courts and nets used in the Red stage are much smaller making it easier for kids to move around and enjoy success.

 Court size: 3 m × 8.23 or 6 m × 10.97 m
Tennis ball: red ball (25% compression)
Recommended racquet size: 21–23 inches

The children will learn: fundamental motor skills / hand-eye-feet co-ordination / the correct grips and body positions / simple swings and making contact with the ball /  the whole range of tennis shots. The modified equipment and court sizes enable the kids to learn better technique because the ball is not too fast and doesn't bounce too high. It also allows young children to have rallys, learn basic tactics and play a wide range of games. So the kids are guaranteed a fun tennis experience!

ORANGE – (Ages 7- 9)

Summer: 1 hour Fri from 3.30pm & Sat from 9.00am

Winter: 45 min, 3:45 - 4:30pm, Mon, Tue, Wed or Thur. 3:45 - 4:30pm. Match-play Fri 3:45 - 4:30pm

After mastering the Red stage, children move on to the Orange stage where the ball bounces a little higher (50% compression) and the court is a bit bigger.

Court size: 6.4 m × 18.29 m
Tennis ball: orange ball (50% compression)
Recommended racquet size: 23–25 inches

Orange players are able to advance further in terms of technique (eg. basic spin control) and tactics (eg. direction control, shot selection, positional play and understanding offense and defense).

GREEN - (ages 9+)

Summer: Fri from 3.30pm & Sat from 9.00am

Winter: 1 hr, 4:30 - 5:30pm, Mon, Tue, Wed or Thur. 4:30-5:30pm. Match-play Fri 4:30 - 5:30pm

The Te Kura THS Green program is fundamentally designed to prepare juniors for interclub. By the end of one season the kids will have learnt to serve and rally consistently with 75% compression balls on a full-court and will know the rules and how to keep score. Some players who are progressing rapidly may be asked to reserve for (or practice with) interclub teams during the Summer Season. They may also progress to yellow ball groups during winter.

Green players are encouraged to take every opportunity to gain match experience eg. At THS Community Play, Tournaments and on Fridays during the winter programme.

Court size: 10.97 m × 23.78 m (full court)
Tennis ball: green ball (75% compression)
Recommended racquet size: 25–27 inches
