Coaching

Te Kura Tennis

Coaching is a key focus of the club, particular for learn to play and junior interclub players. The coaching program is designed to provide a fun and enjoyable introduction to tennis and later, to prepare our players for the competitive environment of Interclub competition. Players are divided into groups according to their ability. Our experienced coaches focus on tennis skills, technique and fitness. The older learn to play players are taught scoring and rules.

We have been fortunate over the last few years to have the services of the Hunt Tennis academy. The academy is run by Alistair Hunt. For the juniors, the academy provides a team of well qualified coaches. As the children move through the learn to play groups and coaching levels, they are encouraged to enter into an Interclub team. Interclub is a great way to improve skills and play in a competitive environment both individually and as a doubles pair.

Coaching for interclub players is held during week nights, while the coaching for the Junior learn to play groups is held Friday after school and Saturday mornings.

Individual coaching can also be arranged by contacting Alistair directly.
Winter coaching programs are also run by the Hunt Tennis Academy.

Junior Learn to Play

We provide organised coaching for junior players on a Friday after school and Saturday mornings. The groups are divided by age and ability.

Our intention with the programme is to develop the children through 3 stages.

Pee Wee’s – Age 4-7 45 mins Friday 3.30-4.15 & Sat 8.30-9.15
  • Learn hand-eye skills/catching and feet co-ordination
  • Focus on making contact with the ball
  • Learn to use the right grips and body positions
  • Learn to hit the ball over the net

We’ve found from past experience that these skills are successful through repetition.

Midgets – Age 7+ 1 hour Friday 4.15-5.15 & Sat 9.15-10.15
  • These kids will be hitting the ball over the net consistently and they will be playing on a full court
  • They will start working on correct swing patterns and target hitting
  • They will also have focus on footwork componentry with ladder work and some hand-eye games.
  • Introduction to basic serving fundamentals and correct technique
Pre Interclub – Dependant on ability Sat 10.15-11.15 and later if required

To be able to progress into this field, kids should be able to serve and keep the ball in play. There will be some technique, mostly focusing on singles and doubles play, scoring and rules.

This programme is fundamentally designed to get them ready for interclub and maybe reserve for some teams if progressing well.

Hunt Tennis Academy (Winter Tennis)

We cater for our youngest learn to play through to our Representative Players. This program is designed to boost your childs tennis performance through the winter period. It will allow your child to be 2 levels ahead when coming into the next summer season.
Groups based on skill level, and will be assigned a coach who will remain and work with that group through out the winter. Your child will be taught all the techniques needed for them to develop their tennis skills to the maximum.
